59 engineering students-interns from MSU-IIT CET conduct ocular surveys in Higaonon, Subanen ancestral domains

Fifty-nine engineering students enrolled in engineering planning and design courses will conduct the “feasibility and planning, detailed engineering design, program of works and budget” for ECOWEB’s development sites with the supervision of faculty and professors following the recent internship program and partnership between the Department of Civil Engineering of the College of Engineering and Technology (CET) of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and ECOWEB Inc.

These student -interns will be conducting “preliminary ocular and ground survey of eight (8) development sites within the Bayug-Iligan and Bayog-Zamboanga del Sur Ancestral Domains which will support the preparation of investment schemes for the eight (8) investment sites within ancestral domains identified by Indigenous Political Structures (IPS).”

These areas covered the Bayog-ZdS Ancestral Domain Institutional and Economic Development Complex in Barangay Conacon, Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur under the supervision of Bayug Indigenous Peoples Structure; Guimbalolan Higaunon Institutional and Economic Development Complex, in Guimbalolan, Rogongon, Iligan City; Malagsom Farm and Eco-Tourism Complex in Malagsom, Rogongon, Iligan City; Katipunan Eco-Tourism Site in Mt. Impadagpo, Purok Katipunan, Rogongon, Iligan City; Binasan Eco-Tourism Project, in Sitio Binasan, Rogongon, Iligan City; Balintad Agro-Eco-Tourism Project, in Balintad, Sitio Binasan, Rogongon, Iligan City; Limunsudan Agro-Eco Tourism Project in sitio Limunsudan, Barangay Rogongon, Iligan City; and, Upper Tablon – Palo Uno Agro-Economic Complex in Sitio Tablon and Palo Uno, in Barangay Digkilaan, Iligan City. Those areas in Iligan are within the ancestral domain of the Higaunon of Bayug Iligan.

There will be eight student-interns that will be deployed in Limunsudan, 14 students in Gimbalolan and Malagsom of Rogongon; eight in Conacon and Bayog of Zamboanga del Sur; 15 engineering students in Katipunan and Binasan of Rogongon, Iligan; seven students in in Balintad; and seven students in in Tablon.

Supervising professors from MSU-IIT are Rengie M. Bagares, Elizabeth Edan M. Albiento,
Joel Opon, Florife Liwanag, Raquel Masalig, and Jonathan Tiongson.

ECOWEB Inc. has been supporting and capactitating the HIgaonoan and Subanen communities for long -term development in these three ancestral domains. ECOWEB also noted the Ocular Survey for the preparation of Investment Schemes for the Eight (8) Investment Sites within ancestral domains identified by Indigenous Political Structures (IPS).

“The output of the activity shall be used in framing investment schemes for specific projects that aims to help develop the ancestral domain and to provide fair return to interested investors. The output shall form part of the investment packages that will be develop by the IPS in the near future for presentation to government agencies and potential investors,” as cited in the partnership agreement.

These students-interns are also supported by ECOWEB Inc. They will also gather guidance and essential inputs and facilitation from Dainara Jabiniao, Jeorge Autida Tito Fiel, Brando Sevidal, and Marlon Tingson while they’re undertakeing an ocular survey and with Carino V. Antequisa, project development advisor (PDA) and programs and projects development support unit (PPDSU).
