Fuerte de la Concepcion y del Triunfo or Fort of the [Immaculate] Conception and of the Triumph [of the Cross]

The present Kota of Ozamiz is officially called Fuerte de la Conception y del Triunfo by the Spanish. It was built in 1756 after the victories of the Iligan-Panguil Fleet or the Fleet of the Corregimiento de Iligan (Military Province of Iligan). The Corregimiento de Iligan comprised the present-day provinces of Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Misamis Occidental and portions of Zamboanga del Norte and Misamis Oriental.

After the victories of Fr. Jose Ducos in the coasts of Iligan Bay and in Panguil Bay in 1554-55, he was appointed by Governor General Arandia as the Capitan General (Captain General) of the naval fleet of the Corregimiento de Iligan. The day that Fr. Ducos assumed command was very significant because it was the eve of the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross (el Triunfo de la Cruz) commemorating the great victory of the Christian armies against the Moors in the Battle of las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. The Spanish ship that was assigned to guard the entrance of Panguil Bay was also named Triunfo.
After controlling the coastal areas of the Iligan and Panguil Bay, he was able to convince the Spanish Central Government in Manila to construct a Fort at the mouth of Panguil Bay to command and control the passage of the Bay where Moro forces passed on their way to the Visayas.
