Iliganons Rise Beyond Basyang: EcoWEB Leads survivor and community-led response (sclr) to TS Basyang

ECOWEB staff conducts an Appreciative Inquiry session in Brgy. Tubod Iligan City to assess the community’s priority needs in the immediate aftermath of Tropical Storm Basyang.

In coordination with community partners, Iligan City Local Government Unit and member CSOs of the Iligan City Peoples Council (ICPC), Ecosystems Work for Essential Benefits, Inc. (EcoWEB) facilitates response and recovery measures anchored on its survivor and community-led response (sclr) approach, going beyond immediate relief to help communities lay the groundwork for long-term resilience.

Central to this effort is the conduct of onsite appreciative inquiry (AI), a participatory process that builds on community strengths and local solutions. Since day 1 after the impact of Tropical Storm Penha (Basyang), ECOWEB has been engaging community groups in Barangays Tubod, Tipanoy, and Tambacan, ensuring that response actions and communty recommendations reflect the priorities and capacities of affected residents.

ECOWEB also continues to play an active role in coordination with the ICPC, co-facilitating the convening of the CSOs on February 8 to dicuss how to complement the city’s humanitarian cluster, providing support and camp management measures in evacuation centers and mapping of the home-based affected families, to strengthen information sharing and on-the-ground coordination.

This response measures to TS Basyang is part of a broader vision that goes beyond emergency relief.

“After the humanitarian response, our focus must move toward resilience. Our goal is not disaster response alone, but to mobilize communities for watershed and environmental protection, so people are better prepared and more empowered long after the emergency has passed,” emphasized Executive Director Regina Antequisa during the ICPC meeting.

ECOWEB continues to ensure that people and communities are at the center of all interventions including recovery measures, while strengthening Iligan City’s resilience beyond TS Basyang.

While coordination and assessments are ongoing, many families in Iligan City still need immediate support on food, water, hygiene, and safe shelter. To sustain community-led response and reach more affected households, ECOWEB is mobilizing resources with partners and the public.
