Following the heavy flooding brought by Tropical Storm Penha (#BasyangPH) in Iligan City, homes were damaged and public spaces were left covered in mud, debris, and accumulated waste. In response, members of the Women’s Association Shower of Blessings in Purok 1-A, Barangay Tambacan quickly mobilized to help restore their community.
Through their Community Clean-up Drive Activity, the association organized residents to clear debris and improve sanitation conditions in their area, helping reduce potential health risks for families affected by the flooding.
Through the Survivor and Community-Led Response (SCLR) approach facilitated by EcoWEB, the group proposed the purchase of cleaning materials to support their recovery efforts. The association requested a microgrant amounting to only PhP 12,635, released on February 28 – a modest amount, yet enough to help them secure the basic materials needed for their clean-up operations.
Despite requesting only minimal support, the group successfully carried out their clean-up activities and mobilized their community effectively. At first, some people doubted whether the women could manage such an effort. However, through determination, teamwork, and strong community leadership, the members of the association proved that they were more than capable of leading the initiative and making meaningful progress in restoring their surroundings.
Their initiative not only supports families in Barangay Tambacan, but also highlights how women-led community groups play a crucial role in rebuilding safe and healthy environments after disasters.
