ECOWEBHighlights | Through the #USAIDMarawiResponseProject in partnership with Plan International, Barangay Tiowi, Butig, Lanao del Sur was granted with five solar streetlights as part of the project’s social cohesion component.
This was proposed by Tiowi Women composed of 20 all-women members with the support of the barangay local government unit who also expressed that this project ensures the safety of the IDPs and host community members.
Residents who have to travel outside the town and come home at night are fearful of their security. Saripa H. Said, 48, CSG leader and a business woman who often travel outside Butig, narrated how risky it is to travel at night passing dark road.
“As we travel, we rely on the reflection of lights coming from houses alongside of road, and moonlight. Residents see this as a burden as we have to risk not only ourselves but also our children who come home after sunset. This makes us really happy as we feel safe now.” she said.
Farming and livestock are the main source of income in this municipality. Over time, families have become victims of muggers who usually targeted their farming materials, animals, and poultry products.
These pressing issues emerged during the Participatory Action Learning in Crisis (PALC) facilitated by the organization. Moreover, this has become an avenue for the community to raise these communal problems.
“For years as a chairperson, all I ever wished for was to help my community in any ways. As much as I wanted the full safety and security of my people, for this what I am seeing as an important concern, my financial capability and the ERA were not enough to address the challenge. That is why I am so thankful for this project.” said Hon. Omerah T. Basman, Barangay Chairperson of Tiowi.
The chairperson and the community of Barangay Tiowi were now taking roles for the sustainability of the project. They even formulated their Operation and Maintenance Policy to guide the community and be reminded of the binding agreement towards the project entrusted to them.
